NTIs (Night Guards)
Some people experience painful sensations in the jaw, painful clicking or popping of the jaw upon opening, limited ability to open, or migraines. Others may notice that the teeth seem to be worn flat on biting surfaces or have notching of the teeth around the gingiva. These are just a few signs and symptoms of bruxism (teeth grinding). Bruxism is detrimental to the structures of the teeth, as well as the temporomandibular joints. This extra wear and tear is typically caused from habitual tensing of the jaw muscle, which is almost impossible to control. An NTI is a device that can be fabricated to help prevent further destruction of the teeth, muscles, and joints by suppressing parafunctional muscle contraction and training the muscle to relax. Impressions, measurements, and a bite registration are taken during the dental appointment, so that a small, fitted night guard can be customized for our patients. The NTI is a smaller, less bulky device and will not trigger a gag reflex—this ensures that it is more comfortable and superior than over-the-counter alternatives.
