To prevent future tooth decay, as well as reverse early cavities, our dental hygienists can provide fluoride treatments at your hygiene appointment. Fluoride benefits people of all ages. Research also shows that regular use of fluoride varnish at hygiene visits will decrease sensitivity caused by exposed tubules that lead to the nerve of the tooth. After the teeth have been cleaned, polished, and rinsed, our hygienist will paint a thin layer of concentrated 5% sodium fluoride onto the surfaces of the teeth to help fortify and protect the enamel. Patients are constantly losing enamel from everyday day use of their teeth, as well as acid erosion that takes place after digesting foods and drinks. Once enamel is lost, the teeth do not form new enamel crystals. Fluoride varnish is a safe, quick way to strengthen the outer layer of the teeth by remineralizing precious enamel. Because varnish is a thick agent and will adhere to the teeth, ingestion of fluoride is not a concern.
